Territorial Authorities

There are currently 69 territorial authorities (city and district councils) operating in New Zealand. There are also five unitary authorities which carry out the responsibilities of both a regional council and a territorial authority. Territorial authorities are primarily charged with controlling the impacts of land use.

What costs are involved?

Territorial authorities usually provide initial advice and assistance free of charge. Additional assistance may incur a fee if it requires substantial staff time and resources. There may be charges for photocopying material and obtaining copies of reports. Check in advance.
