What is DOC's role under the RMA?

The Department assists the Minister of Conservation in carrying out his or her functions under the RMA. These include (sections 25B and 28):

  • Preparing and recommending the adoption of New Zealand Coastal Policy Statements

  • Approving regional coastal plans

  • Monitoring the effect and implementation of the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement and coastal permits for restricted coastal activities

  • Directing a regional council to commence a review of its regional coastal plan

The Department can also participate in proceedings under the RMA in its role as an advocate for conservation on private land (sections 5 and 6 of the Conservation Act 1987).
