Department of Conservation

The Department of Conservation (DoC) manages New Zealand's conservation lands and oversees the coastal environment. It also, more generally, promotes the conservation of natural and historic resources. The Department has about 1600 staff and an annual budget of around $240 million. It has a Wellington-based head office and regional offices located in Hamilton and Christchurch.  The Department also has 13 conservancies and numerous visitor centres and field offices throughout the country. The New Zealand Conservation Authority and 14 conservation boards oversee the work of the Department and the management of conservation land.
